# The 2026 municipal election

Sweden's municipal elections on 13 September 2026 choose the members of the country's 290 municipal councils, which run schools, social services and city planning.

## About the municipal election

Municipal elections are held on the same day as the Riksdag and region elections, the second Sunday in September every four years, and decide the composition of the municipal council (kommunfullmäktige) in each of Sweden's 290 municipalities. Municipal councils are responsible mainly for schools, social services, elderly care and city planning. The threshold to enter a municipal council depends on how the municipality is organised: 3% of the vote in municipalities divided into several constituencies, and 2% in municipalities that form a single constituency. A candidate can be elected directly by personal vote, which requires at least 50 votes. Each municipal council is elected separately by that municipality's voters — the result in one municipality has no effect on the composition of any other, and a municipality sits within a single region.
